Abstract:
As the power consumption of high-end gaming platforms and hardware continues to rise, a German power company recently launched an exclusive electricity price plan for gamers, hoping to attract a large number of home users who use high-performance computers, game consoles and other high-power-consuming equipment. According to German media reports, this new electricity price package called "meinGAMING" was launched by SWK Energie, a public utility company in Krefeld, Germany. This plan has three levels of power configurations designed for different types of players. From casual players to serious gaming families, everyone can choose the corresponding plan.

Among them, "Casual Gamer" is aimed at users who play for more than 10 hours per week, and the system's default annual household electricity consumption is 2,500 kilowatt-hours; "Pro Gamer" is aimed at experienced players who own high-end gaming platforms and may be engaged in live broadcasting, module production, or remote working. They play for more than 30 hours per week, and the default annual electricity consumption is set at 3,500 kilowatt-hours; the highest level of "Gaming" "Households" is aimed at households with two or more active players, involving multiple PCs and console devices running at the same time. The cumulative game time can exceed 50 hours per week, and the default annual power consumption reaches 5,000 kilowatt hours.
From a business model perspective, this package does not provide players with any special power, nor does it improve computer performance or game frame rates. Its core logic is to provide lower unit electricity prices for high power consumption users.
Compared with traditional residential electricity prices, meinGAMING adopts a charging model of higher fixed fees and lower electricity prices per kilowatt-hour. For households with large electricity consumption, the overall expenditure may be reduced as a result; but for users with low electricity consumption, it may not be cost-effective. Therefore, whether the package can bring actual savings ultimately still depends on the overall annual power consumption level of the household, not just the usage of gaming equipment.
SWK Energie stated that this package provides electricity price protection for up to 24 months to reduce users’ uncertainty when facing energy price fluctuations.
It is worth noting that the company also emphasized that all the electricity provided by meinGAMING comes from renewable energy sources. This feature is seen as an additional selling point for consumers who regularly run high-performance computers and gaming equipment for long periods of time.
In recent years, gamers have become an important consumer group that more and more companies compete for. From graphics cards, peripherals, e-sports furniture to beverage brands, various industries have launched exclusive products and marketing activities targeted at players. Now, even electricity providers are starting to treat this group as a separate market.
According to reports, a gaming computer equipped with an RTX 5090 graphics card and a high-end processor may consume close to 1,100 kilowatt hours of electricity in a year if it is run for about 30 hours a week. For households with multiple computers, game consoles, live broadcast equipment and even electric cars, the overall electricity demand will further increase, which has also become an important background for SWK Energie to launch exclusive electricity price packages.
Industry insiders believe that this service is essentially a differentiated electricity price solution for high-power-consuming households, and "exclusively for gamers" is more of a marketing strategy. But as the power consumption of high-performance hardware continues to increase and digital devices in the home continue to increase, such energy services designed for specific user groups may become more common in the future.
