Microsoft will release a free documentary "The Story of VS Code" documenting the ten-year development of VS Code.

📅 2026-09-03

Abstract:

Microsoft recently announced that it will launch an official documentary about the development of Visual Studio Code (VS Code), which will premiere for free on YouTube at 8 a.m. Pacific time this Friday.

Microsoft revealed the news in the update notes for Visual Studio Code 1.136. The documentary will review the development of VS Code over the past ten years, telling how it has grown from a popular editor in the early days of its release to a tool widely used by developers around the world. Microsoft said that if viewers liked the six-part Xbox history documentary released five years ago, this work may be equally worth looking forward to. At present, the official has released a trailer of about two minutes.

The documentary will also focus on VS Code’s adaptation process to artificial intelligence technology. As AI changes the way software is developed and code is written, VS Code continues to add related features. In recent version updates, a large number of changes are related to artificial intelligence, reflecting that AI has become an important part of the editor's development direction.

The film will present the process of this software from its birth to its growth to the present through first-hand narrations from the creators who initially participated in the development of VS Code, as well as the members of the developer community who later promoted its development. The documentary is directed and produced by Stefan Kingham.
