Musk claims to have experienced six "AI insanities" in the past year

Abstract:

American technology billionaire Elon Musk recently revealed that artificial intelligence has left him in a state of restlessness. In an interview at the "X Takeover" event on Saturday, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO talked about the wonders of artificial intelligence. Then he showed an unusually thoughtful air.

“I’m suffering from some kind of cyber insanity,” Musk said. “Maybe more than a little bit — probably pretty serious actually.”

Musk said he has experienced "artificial intelligence or superintelligence (AI or SI) insanity" about six times in the past year - a reference to President Trump's recent renaming of "artificial intelligence" (AI) to "superintelligence" (SI).

"AI insanity" is not a clinical term and has no unified definition, but it is often used to refer to a phenomenon in which frequent use of artificial intelligence deepens the user's delusions. It is sometimes used as a derogatory term to ridicule those in the technology community who believe deeply in artificial intelligence and even use it to extremes. Some psychiatrists believe that if artificial intelligence has a negative impact on the user's existing psychological vulnerabilities, then this is a mental health problem.

Since then, some people in the technology circle have reinterpreted "AI insanity" as a "badge of honor." At a party in May, attendees chanted: “One, two, three — AI is insane!”

Venture capital tycoon Marc Andreessen even proposed the concept of "AIPAAS", which stands for "AI Psychosis As A Service", and called the opposite of psychosis "AI cope".

Garry Tan, CEO of Y Combinator, a Silicon Valley incubator, quipped in March: "I suffer from 'cyber insanity,' and I think a third of the CEOs I know also suffer from it."

Recently, Palantir Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar mentioned that some artificial intelligence researchers started smoking because they hoped that artificial intelligence would cure cancer in the future. He called the phenomenon an example of Silicon Valley's "collective insanity."

What Musk calls "AI insanity" refers to his view that artificial intelligence can understand beauty. "You think, 'Wow, artificial intelligence can actually show good taste? That's incredible,'" he said at Saturday's event.

Musk hadn’t talked much about the concept of “AI insanity” before Saturday’s interview, but he’s clearly seen the term.

In April this year, Musk responded to a piece of content posted by Anderson on the X platform. Anderson writes in the article that there are three states: "AI Euphoria," "AI Psychosis," and "AI Psychosis Psychosis."

"Yes," Musk replied.
