Abstract:

According to "Business Insider", Cat Wu, the former product leader of Anthropic's AI programming tool Claude Code, has announced that he has joined OpenAI and will lead the product management of its core product team. OpenAI has confirmed the news to the media.

Cat Wu was one of the key figures in the development of Claude Code, working with the product's creator Boris Cherny to propel it from an internal experimental tool to a popular AI programming product among developers. Joining OpenAI this time also means that the AI company has introduced a management talent with rich experience in commercializing AI products from its main competitor Anthropic.

According to information disclosed by an OpenAI spokesperson, Cat Wu will work with Nick Turley to develop enterprise products and promote consumer product business with Ashley Alexander, reporting to OpenAI executive Tibo Sottiaux.

Cat Wu said on the X platform that she has great respect for OpenAI, and specifically mentioned that the company has a huge user base of more than 1 billion users.

When talking about future work, she said that she hopes to build AI agents that can provide support for individuals and teams while allowing users to maintain control, so that people can have more time to devote to the work and life they love.

Cat Wu joined Anthropic in the summer of 2024 and was responsible for products such as Claude Code and Cowork, an AI tool for non-programming tasks. Claude Code launched a research preview version in February 2025, and subsequently quickly gained developer recognition for its AI automatic programming capabilities, and became an important business growth driver for Anthropic.

On November 3, Cat Wu announced that she had left Anthropic, saying that October 30 was her last working day at the company. She reviewed the development of Claude Code from early prototypes to the present: initially, users needed to manually approve most operations, and AI was mainly used to answer questions and write tests; now, Claude is able to perform complex tasks such as large-scale code migration and new product development.

It is worth noting that Cat Wu’s departure occurred during a critical period when Anthropic was preparing to go public. Business Insider previously reported that Anthropic planned an initial public offering later in November. In response to speculation about whether his resignation was related to the timing of the share sale, Cat Wu made it clear that this was not a factor affecting his decision.

This personnel change also occurs at a time when OpenAI and Anthropic are accelerating their competition for the AI programming and enterprise-level intelligent agent market. OpenAI is continuing to promote the expansion of Codex to a wider range of software development and non-technical task scenarios. Cat Wu’s experience in Claude Code product development, user growth and commercialization may bring new assistance to OpenAI’s core products and agent business.
