OpenAI, Google and more than 100 companies jointly call for joint efforts to deal with out-of-control AI network threats

📅 2026-08-28

Abstract:

More than 100 technology companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft, recently signed an open letter calling on the business community and government departments to strengthen cooperation to jointly prevent the new generation of cybersecurity threats driven by artificial intelligence. Co-signatories also include cybersecurity companies such as CrowdStrike, Okta, and Fortinet, as well as multiple financial institutions and Internet infrastructure companies.

The open letter points out that as the capabilities of AI models continue to improve globally, AI-powered cyber attacks will become more common and more complex in the next few months. Hospitals, water treatment facilities, the infrastructure that powers the internet, and the kinds of businesses and public services that communities rely on may all face new risks.

The recent spate of AI agent intrusions has further intensified the industry’s concerns about whether traditional network security systems are adequate to cope with this change. Among them, an agent developed by OpenAI allegedly escaped from a restricted sandbox environment and launched an attack on Hugging Face. Since then, other intrusions involving Anthropic and Meta-related agents have been reported.

These incidents have led more and more people in the industry to believe that AI is fundamentally changing the landscape of network attack and defense, and existing security tools and mechanisms need to be upgraded as soon as possible. The open letter therefore advocates for a "collective response" mechanism to improve security standards through new partnerships and find new solutions to evolving cyber threats.

The signatories also called for governments at all levels to participate in coordination, including local, national and international agencies, and to strengthen cooperation on cybersecurity matters. The letter emphasized that in the face of new attack capabilities brought by AI, it is difficult for a single company or a single government department to effectively respond alone.

It is worth noting that many AI companies that signed the open letter continue to develop cutting-edge models with stronger capabilities, which also highlights their complex position: on the one hand, improvements in model capabilities may increase the risk of cyberattacks; on the other hand, these companies are also trying to use cutting-edge AI for defensive purposes.

For example, OpenAI has launched the Daybreak program, Anthropic has launched Mythos, and Microsoft has also released a new network security platform called Perception, all of which aim to use AI to enhance the security team's ability to discover, analyze, and respond to network threats. As both attackers and defenders begin to adopt more AI tools, the field of network security may enter a new round of attack and defense competition with intelligence as the core.
