Abstract:
According to people familiar with the matter, artificial intelligence company Anthropic has reached an agreement with British AI infrastructure company Nscale and plans to rent artificial intelligence computing resources worth approximately US$45 billion. This transaction once again highlights that Anthropic is continuing to massively expand its computing power reserves to enhance its ability to compete with competitors such as OpenAI.
Nscale, founded in 2024, has previously reached cooperation with Microsoft and other companies. Under this agreement, Nscale will provide computing power to Anthropic through Nvidia's latest Vera Rubin chip system. The system is composed of six different chips and is considered one of the most cutting-edge chip architectures. The relevant computing power is expected to start supporting Anthropic's AI services in the second half of 2027.
Bloomberg first disclosed the deal and said the partnership would be for six years. Relevant computing resources will come from Nscale’s flagship data center in West Virginia, USA. For Anthropic, this is also the latest move as it continues to increase its AI infrastructure layout over the past eight months.
Earlier this month, Anthropic just signed a $10 billion agreement with AI cloud service startup Volta, locking in the supply of cloud computing capabilities from a data center in Norway for six years. Volta was established in January this year. In July, Anthropic also reached a $5 billion cooperation with AMD related to computing resources.
Looking further ahead, Anthropic announced a large-scale computing cooperation with SpaceX in May. The collaboration will utilize the capacity of SpaceX’s two data centers and is reported to provide Anthropic with computing resources worth approximately $1.25 billion per month. It is worth noting that SpaceX is led by Musk; due to the long-term competitive relationship between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the combination of SpaceX and Anthropic is also regarded as quite meaningful.
In April this year, Anthropic also significantly expanded its cooperation with Amazon to obtain an additional 5 gigawatts of computing power; in the same month, the company also strengthened its cooperation with Google and Broadcom to further increase the allocation of power and computing resources.
Anthropic is not the only company actively seizing AI computing power. As the demand for large model training and inference continues to rise, technology giants such as Google, OpenAI, and Meta also continue to compete for data center capacity, chip supply, and energy resources. Competition in the AI industry around computing power is still accelerating.
