Abstract:
On September 10, European patent operating agency Tulip Licensing Ltd announced the launch of the imaging and image information processing patent licensing project Tulip Imaging. OPPO joined the project as one of the first four licensees, the other three being Huawei, Canon, and Sony. The project covers more than 125,000 patents accumulated by the four companies over decades of research and development. It is the largest and most influential digital imaging and information processing patent licensing project to date.
The underlying imaging technology covered by this project can be used to enhance the dynamic visual experience on mainstream electronic devices, covering scenarios such as high-fidelity digital commerce and seamless social interaction. Implementers can efficiently obtain patent licenses through Tulip Imaging and customize the license scope according to their own products, technology and business needs.
A senior patent practitioner said that integrating the patent assets of Canon, Sony, Huawei and OPPO, the four leading imaging technology innovation companies, into a unified licensing platform will help reduce the transaction costs of one-by-one negotiation by companies and provide technology implementers with a clearer and more predictable licensing path.
As Chinese mobile phone brands control more than 60% of the global smartphone market share, the innovation leadership of the global imaging industry in the era of mobile imaging is shifting to China. This time, four companies from China and Japan have become licensees of the same imaging patent pool, which is seen as a manifestation of this trend.
As of June 30, 2026, OPPO has more than 125,000 global patent applications and more than 69,000 global authorizations, including about 6,000 imaging patents that are valid worldwide. In 2025, OPPO China's invention patent authorization volume will rank 7th in the world. OPPO Chief Intellectual Property Officer Feng Ying said that OPPO continues to invest in imaging research and development and cooperates with leading innovators in the imaging industry, which reflects its innovation strength in imaging technology and its commitment to building a healthy and sustainable intellectual property ecosystem.
