PlayStation father thinks modern gaming has stalled, calls on developers to stay curious

Abstract:

It’s no secret that many people believe that the gaming industry is not as innovative as it used to be. Development costs continue to rise, and layoffs and studio closures occur one after another. Many developers prefer to be conservative when working on projects. Ken Kutaragi, known as the "Father of PlayStation," also holds the same view. He called on developers to think outside the box and innovate boldly.

The father of PlayStation believes that modern games have reached stagnation and calls on developers to stay curious

In a recent interview with 4Gamer, Ken Kutaragi gave a straightforward evaluation of the current game industry. He said: "The game medium has come to a standstill. On the way to a new stage of development, developers need to regain their curiosity."

However, he remains optimistic about the industry and believes that the game industry is at a major turning point. Developers must persist in experimentation and exploration; once curiosity is lost, the developer's creative life comes to an end. "When you lose your curiosity and feel in your heart, 'This is probably the only thing you can do,' then everything is over."

Kutaragi Ken looked back on the early days of PlayStation. The team’s original goal was to change the world. He believes that contemporary developers should inherit this original intention and actively lead the trend instead of blindly following the mass market. The medium of video games still has huge growth potential, and where it will go in the future is worth looking forward to.
