Abstract:
Samsung releases the third generation Bluetooth tracker Galaxy SmartTag 3. The new model adopts a rounded square design, which is similar to the first-generation SmartTag, but does not have the key ring opening; if you want to hang it directly on a key or carabiner, users need to purchase a Samsung protective case. The device has an IP67 dustproof and waterproof rating, is 35% smaller and 33% lighter than SmartTag 2, and has a 10% improvement in energy efficiency.
SmartTag 3 uses a replaceable CR2032 button battery, which can last up to about 550 days under normal use and up to about 790 days in power saving mode. The new model also expands support for iOS devices for the first time, allowing users to share tracking information with friends, family or dog walkers to help find lost items or pets. Samsung doesn't appear to be positioning it as a direct replacement to appeal to AirTag users; it remains to be confirmed whether the company will support other Android phones as well.
Tracking is provided by the Samsung Galaxy Find network, not the Google Find Hub. Users can set up the device to receive alerts when it enters or leaves a designated area, and can also enable motion detection to receive notifications when the tracker moves slightly, and view location history. When the phone is within approximately 200 feet of the tracker, compatible phones can combine ultra-wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth 6.0 channel detection technology to achieve more precise positioning.
The product is available in black and white colors and will go on sale in South Korea on October 7. It is expected to be launched in the US market in early November. It is priced at US$29.99 per unit and US$99.99 in a pack of four. It is priced the same as SmartTag 2 and is also similar to Apple’s latest AirTag and GooglePixel Tag.
