Abstract:
At the "Surprise and Shine" autumn new product launch held today, along with the debut of the new iPhone 18 Pro series and multiple hardware ecosystems, Apple officially announced the official release date of the next-generation mobile operating system iOS 27. After several months of testing and tuning by developers and public betas, iOS 27 will officially roll out over-the-air updates (OTA) to compatible iPhone devices around the world on Monday, September 14.

As the highlight of this year’s software ecosystem, iOS 27 made its public debut at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June this year and underwent a series of intensive high-frequency tests throughout the summer. The new system deeply reconstructs the underlying generative artificial intelligence architecture of the system and fully integrates the significantly upgraded Siri AI and multi-modal interaction capabilities. It not only enables deeper cross-application context understanding, real-time analysis of screen content, and continuous operation between screens, but also brings real-time simultaneous interpretation and system-level creation tools empowered by end-side large models to devices with NPU hardware acceleration.
In addition to the evolution of the core smart experience, iOS 27 also brings a number of key improvements in daily interaction and communication convenience. The new system officially introduces the iPhone relay linkage mechanism that supports sharing a single number call and SMS link across devices, reshapes the audio control and EQ adjustment interface for semi-in-ear and in-ear AirPods devices, and adds more detailed modern customization options to high-frequency modules such as the Safari browser, control center, and home screen widgets. In addition, in response to Apple’s latest folding screen interaction form and large-screen multi-tasking scenarios, the bottom layer of iOS 27 is also pre-installed with iPad-level interaction frameworks such as split-screen collaboration and side-by-side running.
In terms of model compatibility, iOS 27 will fully open free upgrade channels for past generations of mainstream iPhone models. However, some high-end local AI features on the device that rely heavily on ultra-high memory bandwidth and advanced neural processing engines will still be limited to running on the Pro series and the latest generation models equipped with A17 Pro and subsequent updated chips. Apple officially confirmed that the developer candidate version (RC version) has been pushed out as soon as possible after the conference, and ordinary consumers around the world only need to enter "Settings - General - Software Update" on September 14th to seamlessly obtain the official version installation package. At the same time, major full-ecosystem version updates such as iPadOS 27, watchOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, and tvOS 27 will also be launched simultaneously in the same time window.
