The Pentagon launches military versions of ChatGPT and Grok, covering approximately 3 million military and political personnel

The U.S. Department of Defense recently announced that it has launched OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil and xAI’s Grok for Government on its secure artificial intelligence portal GenAI.mil, providing approximately 3 million civilian and military personnel with generative artificial intelligence tools customized to “warfighter needs.”

Gemini is designed to allow DoD personnel to use commercial cutting-edge artificial intelligence models through a centralized, secure channel that avoids the transmission of sensitive government data through ordinary consumer services. Unlike the public-facing products, the military version does not incorporate the data collection mechanisms that are hard to circumvent in consumer-grade technology products.

According to statistics from the U.S. Department of Defense, GenAI.mil has currently attracted more than 1.7 million unique users, accounting for more than half of the Department of Defense's 3 million personnel.

ChatGPT Mil was launched by the OpenAI government business project. The overall user experience will be close to the commercial version of ChatGPT. It mainly supports functions such as chat, file processing, project management and customized GPT. The Department of Defense said the tool will first serve document-intensive, routine and non-classified work, including administrative affairs, logistics, planning and policy development, and more functions will be gradually added in the future.

In contrast, the Pentagon has positioned Grok for Government more broadly and emphasized its military and combat uses. The U.S. Department of Defense said the tool will help warfighters improve work efficiency, enhance knowledge retention capabilities, and promote safer and more efficient collaboration to perform missions with faster speed and higher accuracy in a variety of operational environments.

Relevant applications include conducting market research and analysis for purchasing personnel and helping logistics personnel with supply chain management. Grok for Government is provided by Starshield AI, a subsidiary of SpaceX. Starshield is a satellite network oriented to security scenarios, using Starlink related technologies.

The introduction of ChatGPT Mil and Grok also reflects the Pentagon’s continued expansion of cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence, and also highlights the absence of Anthropic’s Claude model. Previously, Anthropic had a dispute with the Pentagon for refusing to grant the U.S. Department of Defense unrestricted access to artificial intelligence tools and insisting on setting up specific safety guardrails. The Trump administration subsequently designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, and the company is currently challenging that designation through legal means.

In addition to OpenAI and xAI, the U.S. Department of Defense has also reached cooperation with technology companies such as Amazon Cloud Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI, hoping to further enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities, speed up work processes while ensuring safety, and enhance the technical advantages of the U.S. defense system.
