Trump once again expresses dissatisfaction with the use of terminology in the field of AI

📅 2026-10-28

Abstract:

U.S. President Trump has once again expressed dissatisfaction with the use of terminology in the field of artificial intelligence recently. The reason is that media organizations, technology companies and the public still generally use the traditional abbreviation of "AI (Artificial Intelligence, artificial intelligence)" instead of using the new name "SI (Super Intelligence)" that he had previously proposed.

According to reports, Trump publicly criticized the Wall Street Journal and other media for continuing to use the term "AI" on his social platform Truth Social. He believes that the name "artificial intelligence" can no longer accurately reflect the current level of technological development, while "super intelligence" can better reflect the increasing capabilities and potential of related systems.

In fact, the Trump administration officially pushed for this name change a few weeks ago. Previously, Trump had publicly solicited new name options to replace "AI", including multiple candidates such as "Superior Intelligence", "Extreme Intelligence" and "Supreme Intelligence". After a series of discussions, the government finally decided to adopt "Super Intelligence" as the official title.

Subsequently, Trump signed an executive order requiring federal government agencies to use "Super Intelligence" or its abbreviation "SI" in official documents, policy announcements, public communications, and various government documents to replace "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI". The White House stated that the development of modern intelligent systems has far exceeded the scope described when the term "artificial intelligence" was born, so a new name that is more realistic is needed.

The White House further explained that current advanced intelligent systems are not only able to imitate some human capabilities, but are also creating new tools, enhancing productivity and expanding creative capabilities. From this perspective, "superintelligence" better reflects the direction of technological development than "artificial intelligence".

However, this naming reform has not yet received widespread response from the technology industry. Major artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, continue to use "AI" as a standard terminology in product promotions, technical documents, and industry communications. There is no sign that these companies plan to completely change their names.

Elon Musk, an important ally of Trump and entrepreneur, expressed support for this approach. He believes that "Super Intelligence" is indeed closer to the future development vision to some extent than "Artificial Intelligence", and has publicly stated that related concepts are worthy of promotion.

Although the White House has promoted terminology adjustments at the official level, in reality, "AI" is still the most common and easily understood name by the public worldwide. Whether it is research institutions, media reports or ordinary consumers, they are still accustomed to using this abbreviation when discussing related technologies.

Analysts pointed out that Trump's push to change the name of "AI" this time is similar to his past push for other geographical and policy name adjustments. Although the federal government can unify the terminology within its own system, it still faces considerable challenges in getting the entire technology industry, global media, and hundreds of millions of users to change the term "AI" that has been used for decades.

At present, it seems that "super intelligence (SI)" has become one of the official terms in US federal government documents, but at the industry and public levels, "AI" still firmly dominates. Trump continues to express dissatisfaction with this, which also reflects that there is still a clear gap between the official naming and actual use in society.
