Yu Minhong talks about the chaos of AI education: As soon as you enter the question, the answer will be there. Children don’t even have to use their brains.

Abstract:

At the "2026 Chongli Forum", New Oriental founder Yu Minhong said, "For me, I am very far away from purely starting a business with artificial intelligence. Even if I go all out to do it now, it is very difficult. But how to apply artificial intelligence to my personal career, to New Oriental's educational scene space, to the sales center of East Oriental Selection, and to New Oriental's cultural tourism, I do still think more about it, and I am constantly implementing it."

He mentioned that he personally uses AI no less than 50 times a day on average. Especially with the help of various large models to assist the work, including copywriting selection, question answering and work layout. "The original team of 20 people working for me has now been reduced to about 5 people, and those 15 people have been replaced by AI. I believe that even 80-year-old people are beginning to learn to use artificial intelligence in their daily lives. Artificial intelligence has subtly changed our work and life forms, and has become an indispensable part today. Under this premise, it will penetrate us more deeply in the future."

Yu Minhong said that he has been thinking about a topic recently, that is, under the premise of the ultimate development of artificial intelligence, what else in humans can artificial intelligence not replace? As human beings, what should we do in the future?

He took education as an example, "I think that in the near future, artificial intelligence will teach children at a higher level than ordinary primary and secondary school teachers. However, primary and secondary school teachers are still indispensable, because what children really need is to accompany their growth, which is emotional support, personality support, communication support, and face-to-face comfort support. So in this sense, I think it cannot be replaced."

In his view, the purpose of education is to stimulate children's potential and shape their personality, and the role of the teacher is to awaken the soul and guide the growth. Both teachers and students must have curiosity, perseverance and cooperation at the same time.

Yu Minhong also mentioned the current chaos in AI education. He pointed out, "If you think about our current education, China's education has been alienated. Why? Students answer questions again and again, and eventually some students become mentally depressed and mentally disturbed. Childhood loses happiness, teenagers lose happiness, and young people lose the motivation to love. All of this is the result of Chinese education in the past focusing on scores and The consequences of exams. Today, I found that artificial intelligence has promoted this educational direction, making it easier for children to solve problems and make it easier for teachers to teach. As a result, the requirements for children’s scores and knowledge have become higher and higher. The result is that although children have the help of artificial intelligence, they do not have more time to solve every question and memorize every article.”

He said, "When we do artificial intelligence, we must consider what problems it solves. If what we are doing for education now is just to solve problem-solving problems, then I think you should not do it, because what you are doing is not a good thing. If you are solving problems of students' learning motivation, curiosity, and growth, then you should do it quickly, and the more you do, the better. While embracing artificial intelligence, We must also be wary of the many negative effects it may bring. Nowadays, the answers to the questions come out as soon as the artificial intelligence is input, and the children don’t even need to use their brains. They just copy the homework and finish it. Many children usually do well in homework, but they fail the exam. Why? Because no one can help them when they do the questions. ”

"In the field of education, AI can already do too many things in teaching, correcting homework, etc., and it has indeed saved a lot of teachers' time. So what should teachers do after saving their time? They should provide emotional companionship and ignite responsibility to truly be a qualified teacher. And I think that only when these things are done well can one be a qualified teacher." Yu Minhong said.
