Micron has laid the foundation stone for its new semiconductor factory in India, which will cost $2.75 billion (INR 22.5 billion). The investment will be used to set up a chip assembly and testing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The complex is being built by Tata Projects. The facility will focus on converting wafers into ball grid array (BGA) packages, memory modules and solid-state drives.

The factory, known as the Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging Unit (ATMP), is located on 93 acres (more than 376,000 square meters) in an industrial park outside the city.

The project will create 5,000 direct jobs and 15,000 community jobs over the next five years.

Minister of Communications and Information Ashwini Vaishnaw said on his Facebook personal page that this is a successful move by the government in its efforts to develop the semiconductor ecosystem in Asian countries. Previously, Prime Minister Modi had promised to provide up to 50% government support to all companies willing to set up shop in India.
