In the programming language popularity index tracked by TIOBE for a long time, the ranking of the PHP programming language fell to an all-time low. It now ranks 17th, below Assembly Language, Ruby, Swift, Scratch, and MATLAB.

InfoWorld reports: Paul Jansen, CEO of software quality services provider Tiobe, said that when Tiobe Index launched in 2001, PHP was on the verge of becoming the standard language for building websites. Between 2006 and 2010, PHP even ranked among the top three of the index, ranking third multiple times.

"The main driving languages behind these new frameworks are Ruby, Python, and most notably JavaScript," Jansen noted in a statement accompanying the index. "Besides the competition, PHP also had some security issues. As a result, PHP had to reinvent itself. Today, PHP still plays an important role in small and medium-sized websites, and the WordPress web content management system also uses the PHP language. PHP has certainly not disappeared, but its glory days seem to have passed."

A description of the rival Pypl Programming Language Popularity Index maintains that the TIOBE Index "is a lagging indicator. It counts the number of web pages with the language name. So, while "Objective-C" ranks 30th on the TIOBE Index (one level above classic Visual Basic), "who is reading these Objective-C web pages? According to Google Trends data, "hardly anyone is watching". Fortran now ranks 10th on TIOBE's index.

PHP still ranks 7th on Pypl (based on search frequency for language tutorials):
