In a world dominated by Google Chrome, the most popular mobile and desktop browser, it's hard for other products to make a dent in the market. Still, Microsoft Edge continues to attract more users, despite the often-offensive methods Microsoft uses. According to Statcounter's latest survey results, in July 2024, Microsoft's Edge browser set a new record. Its usage rate among all desktop users reached 13.74%, an increase of 0.39 percentage points in a month.

One year ago, in July 2023, Microsoft Edge’s user share was 10.76%.

Google Chrome still ranks first, with its 64.72% market share leading the pack, an increase of 0.03 percentage points in July 2024. In third place is Apple's Safari browser, which is a dedicated desktop browser for macOS with a market share of 9.1% (+0.07 percentage points).

Mozilla Firefox still ranked fourth with a ratio of 6.64% (+0.09 percentage points). While the browser is not expected to make a significant leap or trend beyond Safari or Edge, it may gain some additional users now that Chrome is no longer compatible with the ManifestV2 extension.

The end of ManifestV2 means that some extensions (i.e. content blockers) will lose some functionality. In fact, the makers of uBlockOrigin, one of the most popular content blockers, have recommended that users switch to uBlockLite, a ManifestV3-compliant extension but with fewer features. Firefox does not plan to abandon the ManifestV2 extension, so uBlockOrigin will not be permanently discontinued.

Here’s what the desktop browser market looks like as of early August 2024:

  • Google Chrome: 64.72% (+0.03 percentage points)

  • Microsoft Edge: 13.74% (+0.39 percentage points)

  • Safari: 9.1% (+0.07 percentage points)

  • Firefox 6.64% (+0.09 percentage points)

  • Opera: 2.91% (-0.45 percentage points)
