The Apple Car Key will soon support cars from more manufacturers, with code showing that three automakers will be joining the ranks. The car key feature has allowed iPhone users to use their mobile devices to open doors and start their cars for a while. In a new code discovery, it appears that three more companies' cars will soon support Apple's car key system.
The backend code powering the iPhone Wallet app has been updated to include references to Volvo, Polestar, and Audi. The existence of these references doesn't necessarily mean support is coming, but it does confirm that Apple is working on making it happen.
Using NFC technology, CarKey allows drivers to lock, unlock and start their car using an iPhone or Apple Watch. The car keys are stored in the user's wallet, and the user can stand near the vehicle or remotely unlock the vehicle, or use an NFC reader to start the vehicle.
Currently, some models of BMW, BYD, Genesis, Hyundai and Kia support this function. The addition of Volvo, Polestar and Audi means that the number of iPhone users who can use this feature will increase significantly in the future.
