Tesla and BP announced an agreement to sell $100 million worth of Supercharger hardware to the latter, for BP to deploy across the United States as part of its own charging network. According to a statement from BP, this is the first time Tesla has sold Superchargers to another company.
BP will begin installing these charging piles next year, but the announcement did not mention the specific number of charging piles purchased by the company, only that BP will purchase 250-kilowatt superchargers. However, these chargers won't look like other Tesla chargers. They will be branded "BPPulse" and will be used as part of BP's own charging network. BPPulse, BP's electric vehicle charging arm, currently operates 27,000 charging points and has announced plans for rapid expansion.
These charging piles can charge both cars with Tesla NACS charging ports and the CCS charging ports used by most non-Tesla electric vehicles. Many other automakers have announced that they are switching to NACS charging ports.
The chargers will be installed at a number of BP-owned locations including Travel Centers of America, Thorntons and Amoco. Under previously announced agreements, some systems will also be installed at third-party locations, such as Hertz rental car centers.
