On the occasion of ARM's listing, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son said that artificial intelligence can help solve some of the world's biggest problems and may surpass human intelligence. "I think this is the first time that humans have experienced something smarter than humans themselves," he said in an interview with the media before ARM's listing on the Nasdaq exchange on Thursday. “Humans are the most intelligent creatures on earth – and artificial intelligence will vastly surpass human intelligence.”
Arm is a 'core' beneficiary of the AI revolution
Son calls himself a "loyal believer" in artificial intelligence, adding that Arm is a "core" beneficiary of the artificial intelligence revolution. Masayoshi Son said that since he founded SoftBank, he has been an enthusiastic supporter of the chip industry and that chip technology has promoted the development of various technologies.
Arm listed on the Nasdaq exchange on Thursday and was enthusiastically received by investors. The company's IPO rose nearly 25% on its first day, with a market value of more than $65 billion, making it the world's largest IPO of the year.
ARM ended the nearly two-year "drought" of large-scale technology IPOs in the U.S. stock market. As the Federal Reserve began to implement the most aggressive tightening actions in 40 years, the U.S. stock IPO market has stalled since the beginning of 2022.
In 1981, after graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, Masayoshi Son founded SoftBank. After Arm's IPO, SoftBank still controls about 90% of the company's shares, and Masayoshi Son continues to serve as Chairman of Arm's board of directors. Forbes estimates Son's net worth exceeds $24 billion, ranking him 69th on the world's richest list.
AI has more pros than cons
Son also said that what is certain is that artificial intelligence does pose some threats to humans if not handled properly, and he compared the dangers of potential misuse of artificial intelligence to speeding or drinking while driving.
But, more positively, AI could also help solve critical world problems such as disease, or help mitigate or recover from natural disasters, he noted.
"In order to protect human beings, society should regulate artificial intelligence." Masayoshi Son said. "However, its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. So, I guess I'm an AI believer. I'm optimistic that AI will solve problems that humans couldn't solve in the past."
In June this year, Masayoshi Son said at SoftBank’s annual shareholder meeting that artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing explosive changes and that the company will soon launch an offensive to end the relative dormancy of the venture capital field for more than a year.
