Recently, astronomers discovered the largest cosmic structure to date, named"Quipu".This super unitary structure is composed of a large number of galaxy clusters, spanning about 1.3 billion light-years (more than 13,000 times the width of the Milky Way), with a total mass equivalent to about 200 trillion suns.
The word "chipu" comes from the long-lost Inca civilization. It is a counting method that represents the entanglement of complex structures.
Researchers pointed out that this super structure consists of a main line and multiple side branches. It is similar in shape to the Cuapu knot of the Inca civilization. It brings together a large number of galaxy clusters to form a huge galaxy network.
It is located within approximately 425 million to 815 million light-years of Earth, and there may be similar structures on a larger scale in the depths of the more distant universe.
For example, the "Hercules Corona-Borealis Great Wall" is said to be about 10 billion light years away from the earth. It spans an astonishing 10 billion light years, but whether it actually exists is still controversial.
In addition, scientists also discovered three other giant structures at the same time, all of which are super galaxy clusters, named "Serpens-Corona Borealis", "Hercules", and "Sculptor-Pegasus" respectively.
The picture above shows the four newly discovered superclusters - "Kip" (red), "Ophiuchi-Corona Borealis" (green), "Hercules" (purple), "Pegasus-Pegasus" (orange) supercluster, as well as the previously known "Shapley" (blue) supercluster.
Prior to this, the largest single structure in the universe was the "Laniakea Supercluster", containing about 100,000 galaxies., such as the Virgo Galaxy Cluster, the Hydra Galaxy Cluster, the Centauri Galaxy Cluster, Abell 3565, Abell 3574, Abell 3521, the Fornax Galaxy Cluster, the Eridanus Galaxy Cluster, and the Eridanus Galaxy Cluster.
The entire Laniakea Supercluster spans about 520 million light-years and has a mass equivalent to about 100,000 Milky Way galaxies, and our Milky Way is among them.
