Recurrent, an American start-up specializing in battery data, collected driving data from 18 models of 10,000 electric vehicles during the winter of 2022-23 to analyze the impact of subzero temperatures on the mileage of electric vehicles. The results show that after taking into account differences in actual variables such as climate, terrain, and driving modes,The average driving mileage in winter accounts for 70.3% of the normal driving mileage, which also means that the actual driving range in winter is 30% smaller than the official driving range.
Although cold weather will cause vehicle battery life to decrease, the degree of decline varies among different brands of models. The survey shows that among the 18 electric vehicle brands in the United States, Tesla, Audi and Nissan electric vehicles have the lowest decrease in battery life in winter.
According to him, the decline in battery life of electric vehicles in winter is not only related to the slowdown of the chemical reaction of the battery itself, but also the demand for air conditioning and heating of electric vehicles in winter.
However, many models are now equipped with heat pump air conditioners. It can use the heat generated by the battery and motor to heat the cabin, greatly improving the heating efficiency of the air conditioner and reducing the loss of cruising range.
