Earlier today, OpenAI released its latest model, GPT-5. This new cutting-edge model represents a major leap forward in many areas. But when will the ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence adopt it? In fact, this will happen soon.

Using ChatGPT with Apple Intelligence is optional. If you allow Apple Intelligence to be used with ChatGPT, it provides three capabilities, including:

  • Use Siri to access ChatGPT: Siri can leverage ChatGPT to provide answers when certain requests, including questions about photos and documents, might be helpful.

  • Use ChatGPT and writing tools: ChatGPT can write text or images based solely on descriptions.

  • Use ChatGPT with visual intelligence: Use visual intelligence with camera control to quickly learn more about places and objects around you.

In iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and later visionOS 2, ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence is powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o model.

Following today's announcement of OpenAI's latest model, Apple tells me that the ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence will use GPT-5 in iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26.

These software updates are expected to roll out next month, meaning ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence will soon benefit from the new model.

Apple provides privacy protections for users who access ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence. These include hiding IP addresses and ensuring OpenAI does not store requests. If you decide to link your OpenAI account with Apple Intelligence, OpenAI's data use policies will apply.

In iOS 26, Apple Intelligence gets new features on iPhone and other devices. These include Live Translation, which can translate conversations in FaceTime, phone calls, and Messages in real time; and an upgrade to Visual Intelligence, a system-level tool that allows you to search and interact with content directly on the screen.

Apple is also opening up the underlying model on its devices to developers, paving the way for building smarter, more powerful apps based on the same technology that powers Apple Intelligence.

In addition to GPT-5, OpenAI announced two open weighted language models, one of which can run on Apple Silicon Macs, and also made some changes to encourage healthier use of ChatGPT.
