Google has updated its Translate app to support real-time online translation. This new AI feature called Live Translation allows you to have two-way conversations with audio and on-screen translation. The Google Translate app already offers an option called Conversations that allows you to have bilingual chats with people who speak different languages.
The new real-time translation feature goes one step further, leveraging Google's latest artificial intelligence models to provide a natural conversational experience in more than 70 languages.
According to Google, the feature can identify pauses, stress and intonation when you speak. It can easily isolate sounds when you're trying to translate languages in an airport or a noisy cafe. The feature has started rolling out to Android and iOS users living in the United States, India, and Mexico.
Google Translate has also added a new language learning feature, which is currently in beta on Android and iOS platforms. It creates practice sessions based on your skill level and goals, allowing you to improve your listening and speaking skills in specific languages.
The generate feature is currently available for English speakers learning Spanish and French. It's also suitable for Spanish, French and Portuguese speakers trying to learn English. You can use this feature by finding the "Practice" option at the bottom of the screen in the Translate app.
You can start practicing by choosing from the scenarios recommended by the translation app, or you can create your own. The Google Translate app saves your daily progress and awards a star when you complete daily activities. Here's how this new language learning feature works:
Google notes that people have translated more than 1 trillion words using Google Translate across Google Search, Lens, and Circle to Search. The search giant is also using its AI technology to understand ancient languages and provide tools for cultural preservation of endangered indigenous languages in different regions.
