Microsoft has quietly launched a new version of 'Windows Configuration Update', directly linked to the 'Get the latest updates as soon as they become available' toggle, which means Windows 1123H2 is probably around the corner. This toggle button allows users to get important updates early. Microsoft last updated it a month before the Moment 3 update was released.
Windows Configuration Update, or Windows 11KB5030509, doesn't contain new improvements or obvious tweaks. However, it does have an interesting modification to the "Get the latest updates as soon as they become available" toggle button, which will be the first wave of Windows 1123H2 updates.
Before we discuss the release date of the Windows 1123H2 update, we need to understand how the toggle button works and what exactly a "Windows Configuration Update" is. First, all Windows 11 or Microsoft Edge updates are now released to the public using Controlled Feature Release (CFR) technology.
The CFR technical approach is similar to A/B testing. It can gradually turn on Windows or Edge features, helping technology giants resolve potentially critical bugs before widespread rollout. After volunteers test features, breaking changes are rolled out to everyone in subsequent monthly security updates.
Some users don't like the CFR or A/B testing method, and Microsoft introduced the toggle button to give users more control over the rollout process. If you want to skip the wait list and get the feature now, you can enable "Get the latest updates as soon as they become available" in Windows 1122H2 or later.
Currently, this toggle button does nothing. It was previously used for the Windows 11 Moment 3 update, and Microsoft is now preparing to use it for the next update - 23H2.
This was confirmed in an internal document released by the company.
A Windows configuration update sets the stage for the transition to Windows 1123H2, but the toggle switch doesn't currently work. If you don't turn on this switch, Windows 1123H2 features will reach you during typical updates, such as Patch Tuesday or optional.
Microsoft has begun adding new features of Windows 1123H2 to the Windows 1122H2 update, but the enablement package required to turn on hidden features is not yet ready. At least that's what's suggested based on clues uncovered in September's optional update.
We previously discovered an enablement package called "Microsoft-Windows-23H2Enablement-Package", but it is not available yet. Once running, new features such as WindowsCopilot and taskbar ungrouping can be activated.
So when will the next big update arrive? Sources tell us that the company will announce Windows 1123H2 at an event in New York on September 21st.
The update is expected to be "available" to more users outside of the Windows Insider Program in October, and eventually enter the production channel in November.
