Over the past 12 months, global Internet traffic has increased by 25% for the second year in a row, highlighting that the rate of Internet traffic growth is not slowing down as more businesses, services and people rely on the Internet. This is one of several facts revealed in Cloudflare’s 2023 Internet Trends and Patterns Review report.
Cloudflare's summary of 2023 research results shows that nearly half of web requests use HTTP/2 and 20% use HTTP/3. Only one-third of IPv6 requests worldwide are made over IPv6. But in India, this proportion reaches 70%.
More than 40% of global traffic comes from mobile devices, but in more than 80 countries, this proportion exceeds 50%. In the United States, desktops are the preferred access method, and mobile devices account for only 33.3% of Internet traffic.
Android is the most popular operating system for surfing the Internet, with more than two-thirds of mobile traffic coming from devices running Google software. In more than 25 countries and regions, Android accounts for more than 90% of mobile device traffic, while iOS's peak share of mobile device traffic is 66%. In the United States, the proportions of Android and iOS are 46.6% and 53.4% respectively.
Another interesting finding is that in the United States, the most common download speeds are 0-5Mbps and upload speeds are 10Mbps-15Mbps. But the average download speed was 201Mbps and the average latency was 39ms.
One-third of global bot traffic comes from the United States, and more than 11% of global bot traffic comes from Amazon Web Services. The financial industry is the most attacked industry, with spoofed links and extortion attempts being the two most common types of threats in malicious emails
Google is once again the most popular general internet service. Followed by Facebook, Apple and TikTok. Mark Zuckerberg's social media giant will be delighted to overtake rival TikTok, the most popular service of 2021.
It’s no surprise that OpenAI is the most popular service in the generative AI category; the company’s Wikipedia entry is the site’s most visited article of the year. We also saw "AI" named Word of the Year by Collins Dictionary.
Roblox leads the year in the Metaverse and Game Services categories, ahead of Xbox Live, Epic Games/Fortnite, and PlayStation. Oculus ranked fifth, surpassing Steam, which ranked sixth, but from July to September, Valve's service was more popular than Oculus.
In other services categories, Stripe knocked PayPal out of the top spot. Binance remains firmly on top as the most popular cryptocurrency service, Amazon leads the way in e-commerce, YouTube tops streaming, and WhatsApp is the most popular messaging service.
Cloudflare writes that the service popularity ranking is based on an analysis of anonymous query data from millions of users around the world accessing its 1.1.1.1 public DNS resolver traffic.
