Microsoft confirmed that it has begun to automatically push and download the Windows 11 25H2 feature update in the background through the "machine learning-driven intelligent delivery" strategy on some eligible devices that are not managed by corporate IT. This round of promotion is mainly for users running Windows 11 Home and Professional editions and the current version is 24H2.
Users can still choose when to restart the installation or postpone the update, but the new version will no longer simply be hung on the Windows Update page in the form of "download and install", but will silently complete the installation package download after the system determines that it is "ready".
The report pointed out that Windows 11 25H2 was initially released in the form of an "enablement package" at the end of September. It is essentially a switch between the existing system version number and life cycle. Therefore, the package body is extremely small, the installation speed is fast, and the actual functional changes are extremely limited. After the activation package is activated, there are almost no obvious new features at the interface level. The new start menu, colored battery icons, etc. that have been previously opened in 24H2 remain unchanged. The problems encountered by users are more due to the cumulative updates during the same period rather than 25H2 itself.
According to Microsoft’s updated official documentation, as long as the “Get the latest updates as soon as possible” switch is turned on in Windows Update settings, whether upgrading from Windows 10 or Windows 11 23H2/24H2, the system will give priority to providing the 25H2 version to users. This means that devices that were previously stuck on Windows 11 23H2 and are approaching the end of support will be gradually booted or even forced to upgrade to 25H2, while Windows 10 users will increasingly be booted directly to this version of Windows 11.
Microsoft emphasized that the machine learning model it uses is used to evaluate which devices are "most suitable" to receive such feature updates. This phased and batch delivery method has been repeatedly used in multiple major Windows version updates in the past and is not an "AI experiment" that has only appeared recently. For ordinary users, the essential change is that computers that meet the requirements and are not centrally managed by the IT department are more likely to automatically download 25H2 in the background in the future. The system will prompt for installation in the appropriate maintenance window and allow users to choose to restart immediately or postpone it to reduce interference with daily use.
Although 25H2 is regarded as an update of "form over content", it is still realistic from a life cycle perspective: support for Windows 11 24H2 will end on October 13, 2026, and after upgrading to 25H2, the support period will be extended to October 12, 2027, which is equivalent to an additional year of official support time. The report also mentioned that Microsoft plans to launch Windows 11 26H2 with more substantial changes next year, and prepare a 26H1 version that is limited to specific hardware for ARM platforms such as Snapdragon
