Recently, Lei Jun accepted an in-depth interview on CCTV's "Face to Face" column. In this interview, he revealed a lot of important content related to cars. When asked about the feedback Xiaomi received when its first car was released, and what expectations it had, Lei Jun said: I definitely have expectations, but the car is indeed very complicated.I am particularly worried that it will not be popular once it is launched and no one will buy it. You must be worried about this. What is even more worrying is that if everyone comes to buy it, they will have to wait for a year or two and they will definitely be scolded. In fact, it is a variety of very anxious emotions.
At the same time, Lei Jun also answered Xiaomi’s advantages in making cars:
Xiaomi has many natural advantages in making cars.Because the essence of today's smart electric vehicles is the integration of the automobile industry and the consumer electronics industry, which is a big integration.
To give a metaphor that is not particularly appropriate, the chairman of a car company told me, "A smart electric car is actually a large mobile phone with four wheels." This statement is of course not accurate, but it shows that the two industries are highly integrated, so entering the automotive industry is challenging for us, but the overall difficulty is controllable.
Three years ago, I felt that building a car was still quite difficult. I was in awe enough to conduct a user survey. Users felt that when Xiaomi Motors conducted a survey, everyone talked about technology and ecology. I have established a principle called"Standing upright is amazing".
What is "keeping upright"? That is to say, we fully respect the laws of the automobile industry, ensure that we can make the first car well, and innovate under this premise.
Our second strategy is called “Tenfold Investment.” For example, to make a car, an average car company invests about three to four hundred people and invests about 1 billion or 2 billion in R&D funds. Many car manufacturers probably invest this much money in making their cars.
We invested 3,400 engineers in our first car, and the entire R&D investment exceeded 10 billion, so we spent more than 10 times the investment. After having this confidence, I did it in a determined way anyway.
