On April 10, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI told investors this week that its early move to significantly increase computing resources gave it a key advantage in the competition with long-term rival Anthropic. Currently, Anthropic is gaining momentum and is considering an initial public offering (IPO).

After Anthropic released a more powerful AI model called Mythos, OpenAI sent a memo to some investors saying it was moving ahead of Anthropic by "rapidly and continuously" adding computing power to support broader applications of its software. The memo also points out that this infrastructure expansion, which has been criticized by some as being too costly, will enable OpenAI to better keep up with the growing demand for AI products.
“This lead is important because computing power is now a constraint on product development,” OpenAI said in the memo.
Anthropic has struggled to keep its service running smoothly in recent months as demand surged as new products rolled out and public support for the company's standoff with the Pentagon grew.
OpenAI cited a report from analyst Ben Thompson in a memo to investors. The report states that computing power constraints may have influenced Anthropic’s decision to limit the release of Mythos to specific partners.
OpenAI said it will have 1.9 gigawatts of available computing power in 2025, three times more than the previous year. The company expects that number to grow into the "low double-digit range" next year and reach about 30 gigawatts by 2030. By comparison, OpenAI estimates Anthropic has 1.4 gigawatts of computing power at the end of 2025 and will reach 7 to 8 gigawatts next year.
"Even when calculating the upper limit of the forecast interval, our computing power growth is far ahead, and our advantage is still expanding." OpenAI said in the memo.
In response, Anthropic referred Bloomberg to a previous statement from its CFO Krishna Rao regarding the deals with Broadcom and Google. Rao said at the time: "This groundbreaking partnership with Google and Broadcom continues our prudent approach to expanding our infrastructure. We are making our largest computing investment commitment to date to keep up with this unprecedented pace of growth."
As of press time, OpenAI had not commented.
