The relevant team received a project cancellation notice on the morning of April 21, and was subsequently arranged to leave their posts. The cancellation of the project did not trigger layoffs, and members of the original "Alterra" development team will be deployed to other development projects.
After the news was announced, IGN released a statement from an official Ubisoft spokesperson.
The statement stated that as part of the company's project portfolio management strategy and creative studio-led development model, Ubisoft will continue to evaluate projects at all stages of development to ensure that they are consistent with strategic focus, quality pursuits and long-term market potential.
Projects that no longer meet the above expectations may be terminated from development.
The cancellation of this project is one of Ubisoft's series of decisions to reduce costs and increase efficiency. In March this year, Ubisoft conducted a round of layoffs, resulting in a total of 105 employees losing their jobs.
The "Alterra" project is inspired by "Animal Crossing" and "Minecraft" and focuses on social, construction and collection gameplay.Players can explore different ecological areas and collect resources and creatures.
The creative director is Patrick Redding, who has worked on the "Splinter Cell: Blacklist" and "Far Cry" series. It is said that the project has been in development for about three years.
