OpenAI today announced the launch of the "Codex for Chrome" extension, introducing direct support for Codex to the desktop version of the Chrome browser, applicable to macOS and Windows platforms. After installing this extension, Codex can use the browser environment to test web applications, obtain contextual information between multiple tabs, call developer tools (DevTools), etc., without taking over the user's browser operations, so as to complete various tasks closer to real usage scenarios.

OpenAI said that after previously introducing the "Computer Use" function for the desktop Codex application, the team observed that almost all of the most common workflows for users occur in the browser. This Chrome extension is optimized for this trend, hoping to make Codex faster and more efficient in handling various browser-based tasks, especially those complex scenarios that are difficult to cover with traditional plug-ins or APIs.

Official data shows that Codex currently has more than 4 million weekly active users, an increase of about 8 times since the beginning of this year. OpenAI regards the Chrome extension as part of its strategy of "making Codex closer to daily work". On the one hand, it improves the auxiliary capabilities for ordinary users' daily office and Internet operations, and on the other hand, it continues to maintain professional support for the developer community.

Users can install this Chrome extension directly through the "Plugins" menu in the Codex application. Once completed, they can call Codex in the browser to assist in completing various tasks.
