Last night, Sony suddenly announced that it would stop producing physical discs for PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. In the future, all new games - including first-party and third-party games - will be sold exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and retailers.

After the news was released, an angry player posted a video of using a paper shredder to crush the PS5 console and controller. Even the packaging box was not spared:

According to Sony’s financial report, 78% of Sony’s games sold in 2025 will come from digital versions, but physical versions will still account for 22%:

Investors believe Sony is eliminating physical discs to increase profits because selling games digitally eliminates the associated costs.
Domino's UK mocked Sony: "In response to gaming industry trends, Domino's UK will stop producing physical pizzas and switch to digital pizzas from April 1, 2027."
Domino's, we will also have a digital version of pizza in the future.
