Unity is making yet another layoff, which will affect 25% of its entire workforce, or approximately 1,800 employees. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company, which makes the popular game engine Unity, said the layoffs were "in an effort to reorganize and refocus its core business and prepare for long-term profitable growth."
Unity has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs over the past year, with the most recent layoff in November last year, affecting 265 employees. However, it is unclear whether Unity will lay off an additional 1,800 employees on top of the layoffs announced last year.
Last year's layoffs came just weeks after the company made changes to Unity's pricing model that frustrated developers. Unity eventually rolled back some of its new policies, and former CEO John Riccitiello resigned as a result.
"Today, as part of the company's restructuring described in our November 9, 2023 Shareholder Letter, we are announcing that Unity has made the difficult decision to lay off employees, with the goal of eliminating approximately 25% of our total workforce across all teams," Unity Communications Director Kelly Ekins said in a statement to The Verge. "This decision was not made lightly and we express our deepest gratitude to our affected employees for their dedication and contributions."
Unity, the developer of popular games such as "Fall Guys" and "Pokémon Go," is just one of the major gaming companies to have suffered layoffs in the past year. Epic Games, EA, Naughty Dog and more developers have issued layoff notices, affecting more than 9,000 people in the industry in 2023.
