The Ubuntu 23.10 "Mantic" beta image is now available for testing ahead of its official release scheduled for October. The new version uses the latest Linux6.5 kernel series, thus having the latest hardware support and kernel functions. The default desktop uses GNOME45 components.
FirefoxSnap has Wayland enabled by default, a new installer adds support for ZFS installations, TPM-based full disk encryption is being trialled, the GCC13 compiler is now used to build all packages and the default compiler version, and there are tons of other package updates.
Ubuntu 23.10 also improves PPA management and security. This release also replaces the ISCDHCP client with dhcpcd5.
Unfortunately, Ubuntu23.10 does not provide any GIMP3.0Snapshot. Additionally, Ubuntu has decided to delay the launch of Snap-based CUPS printers.
What makes Ubuntu 23.10 even more important is that it is the last feature cycle before the important Ubuntu 24.04 long-term support (LTS) release in April.
Ubuntu23.10 is expected to be officially released on October 12. Users who want to help test the Ubuntu 23.10 beta can view announcements and various download links through the Ubuntu mailing list:
