[China has successfully completed a 3.2Pb/s (petabits per second) multi-core fiber real-time two-way transmission test and can download more than 20,000 4K movies in 1 second] October 26th, according to China Information Technology Group’s National Key Laboratory of Optical Communications Technology and Networks, the laboratory recently joined forces with Pengcheng Laboratory and Fiberhome Fujikura Fiber Optic Technology Co., Ltd. to successfully complete a 3.2Pb/s (petabits per second) multi-core fiber real-time two-way transmission test, setting a world record for single-fiber bidirectional real-time optical transmission capacity. "The transmission rate of 3.2Pb/s means that more than 20,000 4K movies can be downloaded in one second." Yang Chao, senior engineer of optical systems at the National Key Laboratory of Optical Communication Technology and Networks of China Information Technology Group, said that this solution has verified the industrialization potential of the multi-core optical fiber ultra-wideband expansion route and provided next-generation high-speed optical communication core technology support for large-scale computing hub interconnection, backbone transmission and 6G transport. "Compared with the traditional C+L band commercial single-core G.652 optical fiber's capacity limit of about 100Tb/s, this system increases the total single-fiber transmission capacity by 32 times; it has completed the real-time transmission verification of S-band single-wavelength 400G and C+L-band single-wavelength 1.2Tb/s (terabits per second) self-developed optical modules, breaking through the single-core fiber capacity wall that is insurmountable only by spectral expansion." Yang Chao introduced. At present, this result has been submitted as an invited manuscript to the authoritative international optical journal "Journal of Lightwave Technology".
