According to The Information, Tim Cook has been in charge of Apple for 15 years and will officially step down as CEO on September 1st next week and become executive chairman. Apple has held a farewell party for Cook. The event was held on August 23, which happened to be the day before Cook’s 15th anniversary as Apple CEO.
In this farewell party, the outside world saw a rare Cook, because he publicly mentioned his partner Mike in his speech.
It is understood that Apple held a farewell party for Cook at the Apple Park in Cupertino, California last Sunday.
Part of the event was held at Caffè Macs, the staff restaurant in the donut-shaped building of the headquarters, and the band OneRepublic performed live in the circular open-air courtyard in the center of the building.
A photo circulated on the X platform shows Cook holding a guitar and posing with band members. There were about 200 people in attendance at the party, almost all of whom were Apple employees.
It is worth noting that in his speech that day, Cook mentioned his partner and called him by his first name Mike.
According to people familiar with the matter, this is extremely rare for Cook. He almost never talks about his private life in public or semi-public situations. The only exception was in 2014 when he publicly announced that he was gay.
According to previous media reports, on October 30, 2014, local time, Cook published an article on the "Business Weekly" website and officially "came out" and attracted attention. Cook publicly admitted that he was gay for the first time and said that he was "very proud to be gay."
The British "Daily Mail" commented at the time that Cook's "coming out" declaration made him the most watched gay person in the business field.
In the article titled "Tim Cook has something to say" at the time, Cook wrote:
"I have never denied my sexual orientation, but I have never admitted it publicly, until now. Now let me clearly express my position. I am proud to be a gay, and being a gay is the greatest gift God has given me."
Cook said that he has always wanted to retain basic privacy. Apple is already the focus of global attention, and he does not want to attract widespread attention personally. But he now realizes that concerns about his privacy may be getting in the way of more important things. So he wanted to come out as gay to help others.
