Generally, users who have purchased digital content do not think about the possibility that the content will disappear one day. The promise given by digital media is that it can "exist forever" and is not affected by the material world. But the chaos of rights management and licensing agreements in the online digital world means that most of us don't actually own the digital content we purchase. Recently, Sony is about to remove MythBusters, Naked and Afraid, and many other Discovery Channel shows from PlayStation users' libraries, even if the user has "purchased" the content.
Discovery Channel, which has merged with Warner, recently sent users a warning email that said "Due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers, you will not be able to watch any Discovery content you have previously purchased and these content will be removed from your video library."
Attached to the email is a link to the PlayStation website listing all affected shows, which is a lot to cover.
A user asked on the forum: "Is there a way to save this content? I use PS4 and have purchased many seasons of shows and don't want to lose them. I thought these contents were mine and would never be lost."
Movies and TV shows first entered PSN through the PS3 platform in 2008. Users can transfer their purchased content between different devices and watch it on PSP and other devices. But starting with PS4, Sony has removed this option. Today, anything purchased on PSN, whether it's a PS5 blockbuster or a TV show, is essentially an indefinite rental until PlayStation servers shut down or the original rights holder decides to remove the content.
