Abstract:
Recently, a large number of Switch2 players reported that their consoles were suddenly banned from using Nintendo Online Services. The error code 2124-4508 resulted in the inability to access the eShop, download purchased digital content, and install games through Game-Key Cards. Although such bans are often associated with running pirated games, many victims insist that they only use genuine cartridges and have never been involved in any illegal software.
Since September 5, complaints about Switch 2 being blocked have increased dramatically on social media. Reddit's Switch Help section has become a major rights protection position, with affected players across Asia, Europe and the United States. A user with the ID OutlandishnessHour37 said that he purchased a new Switch2 through the Indonesian e-commerce platform Tokopedia in June 2026. All physical games are genuine. Only a one-year redemption code for Nintendo Switch Online provided by the same seller may come from a third-party channel, but it is definitely not a pirated game.
What is even more puzzling is that Japanese player MathPrestigious encountered the same ban only two days after purchasing a console and new games such as "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" from the well-known retailer Yodobashi Camera. In its response, Nintendo customer service determined that their device contained illegal software, but the player firmly denied it.
It is currently difficult to accurately estimate the scale of bans from social media, but some Chinese players said that at least 150 domestic Xiaohongshu users reported that network functions were blocked. At the same time, users in North America and Europe have also reported the same problem.
There is speculation that this ban may be related to Nintendo’s crackdown on MIG Flash flash cards. After the device's firmware was updated in June 2025, it was able to run pirated Switch games on Switch2, and Nintendo banned related consoles in batches because of this. However, this round of bans targets a large number of users who purchased machines through formal channels and used genuine cassettes, which is obviously different from the past situation.
As of the morning of September 7, Beijing time, multiple Reddit users updated that their Switch2 has been successfully unblocked. Nintendo customer service responded that the ban was caused by a server-side error and not a user violation. The unblocking work is still in progress, but there has been no official announcement to fully explain the cause of the incident and the scope of the impact.
It should be noted that this ban is based on the hardware identification code and cannot be bypassed even if the account is changed. If it is not unblocked, affected players will not be able to re-download purchased digital content or install Game-Key Cards games, resulting in greater actual losses.
As of now, Nintendo has not issued an official statement on this large-scale mistaken ban incident.
