Abstract:
Just as Blizzard Entertainment has just completed union contract negotiations covering approximately 1,900 employees and announced a number of blockbuster new games at this year's BlizzCon, news that the company is about to launch a new round of layoffs has once again attracted industry attention.
According to well-known game reporter Jason Schreier, a new round of layoffs within Blizzard is approaching, and relevant adjustments are expected to happen soon. The news was revealed publicly during the latest episode of the 8-4 Play podcast.

Blizzard recently announced a number of major plans at the BlizzCon event, including new projects such as "Diablo V" and "StarCraft: Dominion", which have attracted widespread attention from players. Against this background, speculation began to emerge in the industry that Blizzard may have announced multiple projects in a concentrated manner in order to show its business vitality to the outside world before the news of layoffs, thereby mitigating the negative impact.
Some people believe that if these projects are affected by layoffs in the future, the target of criticism from players and the public is more likely to be Microsoft rather than Blizzard itself.
In this regard, Jason Schreier said that he did not agree with this speculation.
He pointed out that Blizzard's layoff plan does exist and is imminent, but the large-scale project announcement at this year's BlizzCon is not to respond to public opinion about layoffs. According to him, relevant personnel had actually been informed of the layoff information as early as June this year, and the layoff process began gradually in July. As for the various releases at BlizzCon, they were planned earlier and there is no direct connection between the two.
Schreier believes that the personnel adjustments currently faced by Blizzard are essentially part of Microsoft's overall restructuring plan for the Xbox business.
Since this year, Microsoft has continued to promote organizational adjustments known as the "Xbox Reset". According to previously disclosed information, this reform will result in the elimination of approximately 3,200 positions in the Xbox department before the end of this fiscal year. Blizzard, as one of the core studios in Microsoft's game business system, is also being affected by this restructuring plan.
It is worth noting that the timing of the news of layoffs is in sharp contrast to the fact that the Blizzard union has just achieved important results.
Not long ago, approximately 1,900 Blizzard employees successfully completed collective contract negotiations. The new contract not only involves salary increases, hybrid office models and remote working rights, but also introduces regulations for the use of artificial intelligence for the first time, strengthens the layoff compensation mechanism, and gives employees the right to recall their positions after being laid off. This agreement is regarded by many labor organizations as an important milestone for the U.S. gaming industry.
However, even if a new union protection agreement is obtained, it does not mean that Blizzard employees can completely avoid Microsoft's current large-scale organizational adjustments.
Industry insiders pointed out that Microsoft has continued to promote the optimization of its game business structure in recent years, while increasing its investment in resources in areas such as artificial intelligence and cloud services. Under the pressure of overall cost control, even Blizzard, which owns long-term successful IPs such as "World of Warcraft", "Diablo" and "Overwatch", cannot completely stay away.
As of now, Microsoft and Blizzard have not officially announced the specific departments, number of positions, and timing involved in this round of layoffs. However, as internal information continues to leak out, the market generally expects that relevant adjustments may be implemented soon.
For Blizzard, which just outlined its future product blueprint at BlizzCon, on one side are the expectations brought by new projects such as "Diablo V" and "StarCraft: Dominion", and on the other side are the uncertainties caused by organizational restructuring and staff reduction. How to complete internal adjustments while promoting the development of large-scale projects will also become an important challenge for Microsoft's game business in the future.
