Driven by artificial intelligence's almost greedy demand for massive digital data, tape, the traditional storage medium born in the 1990s, has not only not been eliminated, but has ushered in a strong revival. Previously, the halted DOGE project had attempted to completely eliminate tape storage on the grounds of so-called "efficiency." However, the actual market trend gave the opposite answer.

The latest data from the LTO Technology Alliance (LTO Consortium), composed of HPE, IBM and Quantum, shows that the overall shipment capacity of LTO-compatible tape media in the first quarter of 2026 increased significantly by 57% year-on-year. If it were not for the negative disruption caused by geopolitical uncertainty on business goals, this increase would have been even more impressive.
Quantum CEO Hugues Meyrath pointed out that enterprises and institutions are currently facing an unprecedented surge in digital data and computing workload pressure. In the context of rising hardware procurement costs, rising data center power costs, and the increasingly stringent demands of enterprises to build higher network security and business continuity resilience, more and more organizations have to turn to long-term cold data storage solutions such as LTO Ultrium. Mylart emphasized that tape is re-establishing its strategic core position in modern data infrastructure. Historical data shows that LTO tape shipments hit a historical peak of 176.5 EB in 2024. Although it experienced a mild correction of about 9% in 2025 (160.3 EB shipped), with the return of current strong demand, the LTO Technology Alliance predicts that the overall market will regain its growth curve by the end of 2026.
The main driving force for this round of recovery comes from the accelerated popularity of LTO-9 tapes. This specification has a native single box capacity of 18TB and can store up to 45TB of data after compression. In addition, the new generation of LTO-10 tapes officially released earlier this year has further increased the capacity. The uncompressed capacity of a single box reaches 40TB, and the compressed capacity reaches an astonishing 100TB. It is expected to attract more large-scale purchase orders in the coming months.
Well-known storage analyst Tom Coughlin said that AI training and inference workloads, as well as traditional data archiving needs, are jointly injecting growth vitality into the LTO Ultrium market. When faced with the pressure of massive data throughput and storage, more and more organizations are not only introducing tapes into auxiliary storage architectures, but are even beginning to consider using them as a stable anchor in the hybrid storage layer. As a classic "cold storage" carrier, tape can quickly expand massive storage space at an extremely low marginal cost per TB. As existing customers accelerate the elimination of old equipment and upgrade to the new generation of LTO standards, this traditional storage medium is showing unprecedented industrial vitality in the era of artificial intelligence.
