An Australian technology enthusiast recently accidentally discovered a batch of dusty DDR4 memory sticks in his garage. The media estimated that this batch of memory may be worth more than $12,000 at the current market price. The batch of DIMMs originally belonged to an old work server. The owner said that his former employer allowed him to keep the entire machine after the equipment was decommissioned for upgrading new hardware.

According to Reddit user VastOption875, the old server gathering dust in the garage contains 30 64GB DDR4-2666 memory modules, with a total capacity of nearly 2TB. Based on a rough calculation based on the selling price of a single 64GB DDR4 memory on Newegg, Amazon and other platforms for approximately US$400, the total value of this batch of memory can reach approximately US$12,000. If the relevant claims are true and these modules are indeed dual-row ECC server memory, their market price may even be higher than ordinary non-ECC consumer-grade memory.

However, this type of ECC module is mainly compatible with servers or high-end workstations equipped with Intel Xeon and AMD Epyc processors, so the audience is relatively limited. In July, Meta confirmed that it was reusing DDR4 memory from retired servers in new DDR5-only machines, using a custom CXL ASIC to bypass the compatibility issues and latency penalties common when mixing different generations of memory.

As consumers and enterprises are leaning towards DDR4, memory manufacturers are also increasing the production of DDR4 and compatible motherboards.
