Analysis says ByteDance occupies one-fifth of China’s data center capacity

📅 2026-10-07

Abstract:

According to foreign reports, TikTok’s parent company ByteDance occupies about one-fifth of China’s data center capacity. According to SemiAnalysis, which analyzed information from 1,000 domestic data centers and 60 suppliers, it was found that China's current data center market size exceeds 24GW, with another 20GW of projects under construction and 30GW of other announced projects.

Of the 24GW of installed capacity, ByteDance accounts for about one-fifth, and almost all of it is leased capacity.

However, since ByteDance is currently a private company, specific data on its actual installed capacity is still difficult to obtain.

DCD has contacted ByteDance for comment.

However, the company is ahead of the likes of Alibaba Cloud, Tencent, Baidu and Huawei.

Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu use a combination of self-built facilities and leased capacity, while Huawei almost entirely chooses to build its own data centers in China.

SemiAnalysis further pointed out that the above-mentioned Chinese hyperscale data center operators are also leasing capacity overseas, and the capacity is expected to reach approximately 4GW and double between 2026 and 2029.

ByteDance reportedly signed a 500MW data center agreement with Vnet earlier this year for its data centers in China.

It is also reported that the company has also invested US$614 million to build an artificial intelligence data center in the Big Data Park of Guangling County Economic Development Zone, Datong City, Shanxi Province.

In September 2026, the South China Morning Post reported that ByteDance was in talks with local data center providers to add 5 to 6 gigawatts of computing capacity in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia.

ByteDance is also a customer of ChinData’s data center located in the Taihang Mountain Energy and Information Technology Industrial Park near Datong City, Shanxi Province, northern China.

Outside of China, ByteDance is the anchor tenant of the Bridge data center in Johor, Malaysia, and is working with Singapore’s DayOne, with plans to expand in Thailand, Brazil and Australia.

In the United States, TikTok is hosted in Oracle's data center in Texas; in Europe, the company leases a data center in Norway from Green Mountain and cooperates with Hyperco and DayOne in Finland.

In addition to the social media platform TikTok, ByteDance also has a cloud service called Volcano Engine.
