Compared with traditional aluminum-plastic film soft-pack batteries, steel-shell batteries have significantly improved safety, heat dissipation, energy density and detachability.
First of all, in terms of safety, which everyone is concerned about, the surface hardness of steel-cased batteries is much higher than that of soft-pack batteries, which can better protect the battery cells. It has stronger resistance to impact and vibration, and is not easily damaged or deformed by external forces. Its rigid shell helps keep the internal structure stable, so even if gas is produced inside the battery, the degree of bulging will be relatively minor.
In addition, the thermal conductivity of the steel shell is better than that of traditional soft shells. In high-power consumption scenarios, it can conduct heat away more efficiently, helping to alleviate the iPhone's heating problem at peak performance and maintain more stable performance output.
In terms of energy density, steel-cased batteries allow for higher space utilization inside mobile phones, eliminating the need to reserve too much safety distance. Under the premise of ensuring safety, the cell density of the battery can be increased, resulting in longer battery life under the same volume.
More importantly, the steel shell design reduces the difficulty of battery disassembly, making it easier for users to manually replace the battery. For Apple, steel-cased batteries are more in line with new EU consumer electronics regulations.
