Abstract:
Apple has confirmed to the outside world that there is a serious system vulnerability related to Face ID (Face ID) in its latest iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models. This issue will cause the device to freeze suddenly under certain facial recognition unlocking or authentication scenarios, and subsequently trigger an automatic system restart.
Many first users of the new phone have reported on social platforms and Apple's official support community that when trying to perform biometric payment and account login in a dark light environment, at a special angle, or by calling Face ID through a third-party application, the screen will freeze momentarily, and then the device will enter a black screen and display the Apple logo for a soft reboot (Soft Reboot). Some affected users said that the glitch not only disrupted their daily unlocking experience, but also frequently resulted in the loss of unsaved app data and payment interruptions.
In response to media inquiries, Apple stated that the engineering team had successfully reproduced the fault and confirmed that the problem was caused by a memory allocation error in the facial recognition sensor depth map processing algorithm in the new system, and was not a hardware-level module defect. Apple emphasized that the security of users' biometric data has not been affected in any way and is accelerating testing of a dedicated patch.
Officially, the iOS system update that fixes the Face ID restart vulnerability has entered the final testing stage and is expected to be pushed to all affected devices as an emergency maintenance patch in the next few days. During this period, Apple recommends that users who frequently encounter this problem can temporarily turn off the Face ID verification permissions of third-party applications, or switch to traditional digital passwords for transition.
