Abstract:
Apple and U.S. carrier AT&T have yet to explain why some iPhone 18 Pro Max are losing cellular connectivity on AT&T's network. Apple said that affected phones may not be able to make calls, send and receive text messages, or use mobile data; some users reported that the device will enter SOS mode. Apple said only a "small percentage" of users were affected, despite numerous complaints on Apple's support communities and other platforms.

Apple has stated that once a fault occurs, software updates alone cannot restore device service, and the affected phones need to be replaced. The purpose of the iOS 27.0.1 and AT&T carrier settings updates is to reduce the likelihood that other devices will experience the problem again, not to repair phones that have lost connectivity.
Apple recommends that iPhone 18 Pro Max users who have not been affected yet install iOS 27.0.1 in time; AT&T users' carrier settings updates will be pushed automatically, or they can check whether they can be installed manually in "Settings - General - About This Mac". Users who are no longer able to connect to the Internet should contact Apple or AT&T for replacement.
The currently known scope of the problem is limited to the combination of iPhone 18 Pro Max and the AT&T network, and Apple said it has not found other iPhone models or carriers to be affected. The iPhone 18 Pro Max sold in the United States uses Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 baseband, while versions in other regions use Apple’s self-developed C2 baseband; however, Apple has no evidence that baseband differences are the cause of the failure, and it has not yet been determined whether the two are related.
AT&T has previously stated that it is cooperating with Apple to handle the matter, and Apple has not announced the conclusion of further investigation or a technical explanation of the root cause of the fault.
