In order to respond to users' strong demand for improved battery life, Apple used silicon carbon anode battery technology on the latest iPhone 18 Pro Max, allowing its battery capacity to exceed the 20 watt-hour (Wh) mark for the first time. Among them, the US eSIM version has a rated capacity of 5567 mAh (21.75 Wh), and the European version equipped with a physical SIM card slot also has a rated capacity of 5391 mAh (21.06 Wh).
However, this hardware upgrade has touched the regulatory red line of international air transportation - according to current regulations, lithium batteries with a single cell capacity of more than 20 watt-hours will be classified as Category 9 dangerous goods and face extremely strict packaging, certification and logistics cost restrictions in the transportation process.
Faced with this compliance problem, the industry generally adopts physical solutions of splitting batteries into dual cells or reducing battery capacity for specific regions, while Apple has bypassed hardware restrictions through innovation at the software level. Official support documents show that Apple has developed a new "battery firmware solution" for iPhone 18 Pro Max. This solution uses the underlying firmware to forcibly lock the battery's available charging limit below 20 watt hours during the entire process of equipment manufacturing and transportation, thus making it fully compliant with aviation standards exempt from supervision during the logistics and transportation stage.
When consumers receive the new iPhone 18 Pro Max and turn it on for the first time to complete activation, this system-level restriction will be automatically lifted and the phone will unlock all rated capacity without any impact on the user's actual daily battery life experience.
For subsequent returns, second-hand sales, or after-sales repair scenarios, Apple has added a new function option called "Prepare to Ship" in the settings menu of the iOS system. If users need to send activated iPhone 18 Pro Max via express delivery, they need to enter the system and manually turn on this function. The system will then automatically perform a discharge and heat operation to discharge the battery capacity below the 20Wh safety line and lock the charging limit. In this state, the mobile phone settings page will display "Ready" in order to successfully pass express delivery and aviation security.
With the rapid popularity of high-energy-density batteries in the field of smartphones, current international transportation safety standards have lagged behind. Through the combination of software and hardware strategy of "factory software sealing and activation automatic unlocking", Apple has avoided compliance risks without changing the hardware design and increasing physical costs. This approach is very likely to become an industry standard practice for cross-border transportation of high-endurance smartphones in the future.
