"Magneto" Ian McKellen sent a message to express his condolences:
Sir Patrick Stewart (1940-2026)
Patrick's life is drawn first and foremost from his identity as being born and raised in Yorkshire. Yorkshire was a proud county in the north of England, a land he loved until his death. You can feel it in his accented voice, and in the openness and forthrightness with which he expresses his thoughts and feelings. Yorkshiremen never tolerate half-truths or shy away from big questions. He always had joy and sorrow written all over his face, which made him a trustworthy and admirable person, and as far as I was concerned, I loved him.
We first met half a century ago when we were both ambitious young actors in the Royal Shakespeare Company, but we were not in the same play. My first profound memory was running into him on the streets of central London a few years later. He told me that he had been offered a major role in Star Trek. "But Patrick, think about your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to take that risk? Get lost in Hollywood for years?" He took the risk, and we all should be grateful to him for the surprises he delivered not just to loyal Star Trek fans, but to movie and theater audiences as well. Audiences marveled at the way he parlayed his international fame into a string of successful films (including, of course, X-Men) and in classic plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett in Stratford, London's West End and Broadway.

The United States was his second home, where he met his beloved Sunny, who cared for him in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad. But he never forgot his origins: the proudest achievement of this actor, revered and beloved on both sides of the Atlantic, was being appointed chancellor of the University of Huddersfield in Yorkshire.
