Abstract:
Through APK teardown analysis of the latest version of the Gmail app, researchers discovered that Google is developing an HDR (high dynamic range) emoticon feature for its Chat communication service. Google Chat is the successor to Google Hangouts and an important part of the Google Workspace office suite.

In the latest version of Gmail code, developers discovered a string content related to the new feature, which mentioned "display supported emojis in high dynamic range (HDR) with enhanced brightness and contrast." This discovery shows that Google is trying to improve the visual expression of emojis through HDR technology.
According to the information currently disclosed, this feature is directly named "HDR Emoji". When enabled, emojis are expected to gain higher brightness and stronger contrast, resulting in better readability and more eye-catching visual effects in different display environments. It is unclear at this stage whether this feature only applies to user-defined emoticons, but the relevant code mentions "supported emoticons", which means that in the future it may cover the entire emoticon library supported by the device, not just individual emoticon types.
Currently, Google has not officially announced its official plan to introduce HDR emoticons into Google Chat. However, judging from the fact that the relevant code has appeared in the latest application version, this feature may have entered the late stages of development and may not be too far away from its official launch. For users of devices that support HDR display, the emoticons seen during chats in the future will have more vivid brightness and richer visual layers.
