Google reportedly in talks to join Trump's "Golden Dome" defense plan

Abstract:

Alphabet’s Google is in talks with the U.S. Department of Defense to collaborate on a new data security effort to support the $185 billion Golden Dome missile defense project, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Pentagon is forming a new industry group to ensure the data security of military software used to build the "Golden Dome", people familiar with the matter said.

The group, likely to be made up of multiple companies, will work to ensure data flowing into new command-and-control software can withstand attacks that could, for example, cut off access to landlines, cellphone towers and other critical communications infrastructure, people familiar with the matter said.

One of the people said the talks focused on Google's data storage, networking and network security capabilities. They also said negotiations were still at an early stage and plans could change. Aalyria Technologies, a web company spun off from Google, is also involved in the group, the people added.

A Pentagon official said that while the department may explore some preliminary options, no final decisions have been made on new alliances or industry players. Google and Aalyria declined to comment.

Golden Dome is a signature defense plan of U.S. President Donald Trump that aims to build a multi-layered defense system from the ground to space to protect the United States from foreign attacks.

Golden Dome’s command and control layer was developed by an independent team, including Anduril, Palantir and SpaceX, and is designed to control and connect the U.S. military’s weapons systems, radars and other previously independent systems.
