Abstract:
An unofficial app developed by players is breaking the platform boundaries between Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox. Brazilian developer RafaelNGP has launched a home-made software called PSBox Cloud Gaming, which allows the jailbroken PS5 to directly run the Xbox cloud gaming service. Players can access the Xbox game catalog on the Sony console and use the DualSense controller to play games. The application can also use the PS5's own graphics processing capabilities to upgrade the 1080p cloud game screen to a maximum 4K output.

This application does not allow PS5 to directly run Xbox games through an emulator, but uses cloud game streaming. The game actually runs on Microsoft's remote server, and the PS5 is responsible for receiving video images, transmitting the player's operating instructions, and handling some image upgrade tasks. Therefore, it does not require native versions of Xbox games to be installed or run on PS5, nor does it mean that PS5 already has the ability to run Xbox games natively.
The original intention behind the development of PSBox Cloud Gaming is quite straightforward: since players already own a PS5, why do they have to switch to other devices to use Xbox cloud gaming? Through this app, a jailbroken PS5 can become another entrance to Microsoft's game streaming service, allowing players to experience Xbox games directly on their living room TV.
The project was independently promoted by developer RafaelNGP, and part of the development work relied on Anthropic's Claude artificial intelligence programming tool. The application is published on GitHub in the form of homebrew software and is developed using open source code. It is mainly targeted at PS5 consoles that can run Homebrew applications.
According to the project introduction, PSBox Cloud Gaming supports cloud game streaming at up to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, and can upgrade the picture to 4K output. It should be noted that the so-called 4K does not mean that cloud games are rendered at native 4K resolution. The game screen is still transmitted at a lower resolution, and is subsequently image processed and upscaled by the PS5 to adapt to the display needs of a 4K TV.
In terms of picture upgrade, the application supports technologies such as AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1 (FSR 1) and Anime4K. The former is an image processing solution based on spatial amplification, while the latter is often used for amplification of animation and video images. Both can improve the look and feel of low-resolution images on high-resolution display devices, but the actual effect depends on the game content, original image quality and specific settings, and cannot be completely equivalent to native 4K rendering.
This design also reflects a potential use of PS5 hardware. Although the PS5 has not received an official Xbox cloud game client, its graphics processor can still undertake certain picture post-processing tasks. Through unofficial software, developers can use part of the computing resources of the console that originally served PlayStation games for cloud game screen upgrades.
In terms of operation, PSBox Cloud Gaming can map the PS5 DualSense controller to an Xbox controller, allowing players to use a familiar controller to operate Xbox games. The app is also continuing to improve controller functions, including vibration, adaptive triggers, light bars, and voice chat.

The recently released version 0.9.5 of the project further expands the functionality. According to the update announced by the developer, this version adds features such as multi-language support, local multiplayer gaming with up to four controllers, controller calibration, automatic updates, game-specific profiles, and voice chat through the DualSense built-in microphone.
Support for up to four controllers is particularly noteworthy. Xbox cloud gaming does not mean that all games must be played by a single player. Some works that support local multiplayer games can allow multiple players to participate together. By mapping multiple DualSense controllers to Xbox controllers, PSBox allows players to cooperate or compete locally on the same PS5, but the specific experience still depends on whether the game itself supports the corresponding multiplayer mode.
In addition to Xbox cloud games, PSBox also adds the Xbox Remote Play function. This means that in addition to streaming games from Microsoft's cloud servers, players can also try to transfer game footage from their own Xbox console to PS5.
There are essential differences between Xbox Remote Play and Xbox cloud games. The former runs the game on the player's own Xbox console and then transmits the screen to other devices; the latter runs the game on Microsoft's data center. Both methods require a network connection, but have different requirements for device conditions, game sources, and network environments.
For players who already own an Xbox console, the Remote Play function provides another usage scenario: even if you mainly use a PS5 at home, you can access games on your Xbox console through this home-made app without having to switch to other devices specifically to stream games. However, this feature also relies on unofficial software, and actual stability and compatibility may change with system updates.
The emergence of PSBox also reflects that the boundaries between game console platforms are changing in recent years. Microsoft has been continuously adjusting its Xbox business strategy, bringing some first-party games to competitive platforms such as PlayStation, and seeking more users by expanding the distribution of games. At the same time, Xbox cloud gaming also makes game content no longer completely dependent on a specific hardware.
However, PSBox Cloud Gaming is not an official product launched by Sony and Microsoft. It is neither official PlayStation software nor an Xbox client officially released by Microsoft. The ability of the application to run mainly relies on the system environment and related tools developed by the PS5 jailbreak community, rather than Sony opening up Xbox cloud game support to third parties.
This also means that not all PS5 users can use the app directly. Running Homebrew software usually requires the host to have corresponding system vulnerabilities and jailbreak conditions. Compatibility depends on the specific system firmware version and the support of related tools. Even if they are both PS5s, there may be significant differences between different firmware versions.
Jailbreaking itself also comes with certain risks. Modifying the host system may cause system stability problems and affect the use of online services; if related operations violate the platform's terms of service, it may also bring risks to your account or service access. Therefore, this app is not an official feature that ordinary players can use simply by downloading it from the PlayStation Store.
In terms of actual experience, PSBox still has some problems that need to be solved. Early testers reported that video abnormalities such as macro blocks and pink image artifacts may occur during some game streaming, and the vibration function of the DualSense controller may also perform unstable. Feedback from different players is inconsistent. Some users say they have a good experience, but at this stage it cannot be concluded that the application has reached the stability of a mature commercial product.
In addition, the actual performance of cloud gaming is still affected by network connection quality, latency, server load, and game compatibility. Even if an application can provide 1080p, 60 frame streaming capabilities, it does not mean that all games and all network environments can consistently achieve this level. Picture upscaling can improve the output resolution, but it cannot eliminate network latency or restore all the image details that have been lost in the original video stream.
Account and service support are also worth noting. Players still need to log in to their account in accordance with the regulations of Microsoft's Xbox cloud gaming service and meet the access conditions for the corresponding game. Most games in the subscription catalog require an eligible Game Pass subscription, and the specific content available may also be affected by factors such as region, account qualifications, and game authorization. Different conditions may apply to individual free games that support cloud play, so you cannot simply assume that you can play all Xbox games for free after installing PSBox.
Since this application relies on Microsoft's cloud gaming services and related interfaces, if Microsoft adjusts the service mechanism, login method or technical interface in the future, its normal operation may also be affected. Developers can try to solve some compatibility issues by updating software, but there is no guarantee that unofficial clients will always be able to access all Microsoft services.
From a technical perspective, the significance of PSBox Cloud Gaming is not to turn PS5 into a real Xbox, but to demonstrate how the player community can integrate game services from different platforms onto the same device through software development. It uses cloud gaming to bypass the traditional game console hardware compatibility issues, and uses PS5's graphics processing capabilities to improve the output of streaming images.
With the gradual development of cloud games, the relationship between game running platforms and game display devices is becoming more flexible. In the future, players may no longer need to purchase a corresponding console in order to experience games on a certain platform, but whether this can be achieved still depends on the service provider's policies, game authorization, network conditions and device compatibility.
For now, PSBox is still an experimental home-made application for jailbroken PS5 users. It demonstrates what is possible with cross-platform game streaming and proves that the player community is still capable of exploring new ways of using it outside of the official ecosystem. However, this app is still quite far away from becoming a formal solution that ordinary PS5 users can use safely and stably.
