Abstract:
Microsoft desktop publishing software Publisher, which has been accompanying Windows users for 35 years, is officially withdrawing from the stage of history. As Microsoft advances its Microsoft 365 product line streamlining plan, Publisher has begun to be removed from some users' computers, and the traditional PUB file format will gradually lose official support.

According to Microsoft's previously announced arrangements, Publisher has officially terminated support in October 2026. Recently, many Microsoft 365 users have discovered that after installing the latest version of Office updates, Publisher no longer appears in the application list. This means that this classic software, which has been around since 1991, is being phased out.
Publisher has long been positioned as a desktop publishing tool between Word and professional typesetting software. It has been widely used to produce brochures, posters, business cards, newsletters, and various marketing materials. With its relatively simple operation method, it has accumulated a large number of users among small and medium-sized enterprises, schools and home user groups.

With Publisher being removed from the shelves, the PUB file format is also facing compatibility issues. Microsoft stated that Word, PowerPoint and other Office applications in Microsoft 365 do not natively open PUB files. For users who still have a large number of PUB documents saved, this means that related files may become increasingly difficult to access in the future if the format is not converted in advance.
Microsoft recommends that users convert existing PUB files to PDF format as soon as possible for long-term storage and sharing. For files whose content still needs to be edited, it is recommended to convert them to Word documents or PowerPoint presentations. However, Microsoft also admitted that because Publisher has a unique page layout and object management mechanism, layout changes may occur in complex documents during the conversion process, so users need to carefully check the conversion results.
In fact, Publisher’s exit is not surprising. In recent years, Microsoft has been pushing users to switch to products such as Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Designer. With the rise of web design tools, online collaboration platforms and AI-driven design services, Publisher's original market positioning has gradually been weakened, and its update frequency is much lower than other core applications in the Office suite.

For users who are still using the permanently licensed version of Office, the Publisher program will continue to run in the short term, as long as the software is installed on the local computer. However, as Windows updates and the Office ecosystem continue to evolve in the future, related compatibility guarantees will become increasingly limited.
Industry insiders believe that Publisher’s retirement marks the end of an era. As one of the oldest members of the Microsoft Office family, it has helped millions of users complete layout and design work from personal flyers to business promotional materials. Today, as Microsoft focuses its resources on cloud services, collaboration tools and artificial intelligence products, Publisher has officially become a piece of history in the development of Microsoft software.
